Man, I overheard my brother's girlfriend yelling at him the nastiest things. "You make me want to kill myself," "you're worthless, no one likes you," "shut the fuck up, shut the fuck up, SHUT THE FUCK UP" ... I found him crying in his closet after she left.
They took a break for a week, during which my brother started realizing he was in an abusive relationship. Then they met up for a couple of days and my brother came back saying "I realized it was all my fault for not being a good enough boyfriend to her." Now they're back together.

In high school I “dated” a girl since she claimed she’d kill herself if I didn’t. I felt sorry for her. She ended up having so many problems that I finally saw through it and ended things. Got a call from her years later and she was doing fine though still not quite right.
Then I fell for basically the same trap with someone else right out of college. Absolute disaster. I’ve learned my lesson now.
Life is full of hard lessons. The best we can hope for is to come out the other side without too much permanent damage.
