In high school I “dated” a girl since she claimed she’d kill herself if I didn’t. I felt sorry for her. She ended up having so many problems that I finally saw through it and ended things. Got a call from her years later and she was doing fine though still not quite right.

Then I fell for basically the same trap with someone else right out of college. Absolute disaster. I’ve learned my lesson now.
