They are children who never grew up, that's about it. Just look at the most popular movies of the day - comic book movies. This is to pat the head of the man child and keep him buying Funco dolls instead of firearms and learning how to maintain a garden. It's much easier to take down overweight man babies clutching superhero dolls than men who work hard in real life.
