So, whoever actually owns that hotel .... just lost it to a bunch of squatters? If I owned that hotel, I'd authorize any law-enforcement to go through and clear out the rats. Then sue whoever is collecting the $160k for damages.
edit: In many states, I believe you could shoot an armed trespasser. Although that is apparently not the case for Minnesota.
When stuff like this happens you end up with landlords paying some heavies under the table to storm the place and beat the living day lights out of everyone inside.
I don't get your point but if you want to find out more you should look up squatters rights. It's a reoccurring problem where people abuse it often occupying buildings briefly then it turning out very difficult to remove them even though they're clearly in the wrong and stealing.
It's easier to squat on a property then it is to be evicted. Rarely you get ridiculous cases such as a family going on holiday then coming home to find all their stuff is gone and another family is living there.
Every now and again you have landlords get their mates or someone else to go in and clear everyone out, smash everything up and basically kick ass. In other cases they might send infiltrators and get the people kicked out, plant a bunch of drugs or something.
Unfortunately this is what people have to resort to when the law fails. Imagine working and affording a property only for someone to steal it from you just like that. You can lose years of hard earned income. You're reduced to the equivalent of a slave (theft is slavery).
Usually squatters rights requires continued occupancy but it can be difficult if people just lie. This particular case isn't squatting it's idiots playing Die Hard with a Hotel but if the cops don't do anything you can imagine the owners are going to have to find their own options.
Liberal teenagers and young adults often squat as a fad for a year or so in unoccupied buildings they use as hippy dens but this is just hijacking a building.
My comment was just a play on the expression "Look the other way" which means someone purposefully does not observe someone committing an offense so they can later claim no knowledge of it. It is a common plot device.

Sorry, I couldn't read your comment because I was busy looking the other way.

The “volunteers”(occupiers) are looking for government funding to keep their philanthropy going, according to the article.
