There was actually a vigilante group thate did this in Missouri way back. They had problems with horse and cattle thieves and counterfeiters-- they formed a group and would round up the ne'er-do-wells, tie them to a tree and "slick" their backsides with a hickory switch like they were misbehaving children. Thus the name, "Slickers". Apparently it becomes difficult to rustle cattle with a blistered rear-end, and the area was pretty well cleaned up for a while. After a bit, the original Slickers started abusing their power, whereupon another vigilante group, the "anti-slickers" was formed (complete lack of imagination in choosing names, IMHO) resulting in the "slicker wars" which were unfortunately fought with guns and not settled through drive by public spankings, which would have been hilarious...
