From what I've seen (as a patriotic 'murican who is also a furry), it's the other way around.
The radical left sjw types set up their own little sub-group within the furry community that's hostile to the host group, and then they started aggressively subverting everyone around them into the cult.
I believe they're doing it to the trans community too. I've seen reasonable transgender people get banned by the sjw's for calling out their bullshit. There's a division in the transgender community between "trans-medicalists", who believe you have to have gender dysphoria to be transgender, and "self-identifiers", who believe literally anyone can be transgender for any reason, including as a protest against sex and gender norms. IE between people who use facts to determine who's a transgender vs people who believe "if I just decide to be a woman one day then I am one". The far-left are always on the side of the "feels before facts" transgenders and always hostile to the trans-medicalists.
I think the left are targeting groups of people who aren't sure of themselves, don't have a strong sense of self, etc, and brainwashing them to increase their numbers. Their tactics for subverting all these malleable people to their cause are very similar to cult brainwashing techniques. The subgroup always acts together and bullies individuals for the smallest transgressions, and creates an atmosphere where you feel like you're the only one who opposes their way of thinking, and so you are intimidated into silence while they run amok.
They're so effective at it that I suspect they're professionals who studied how to do this.
