I think I've finally had enough of their bullshit. I used to be an obnoxious liberal but sometime in 2014 before the midterms I came to my senses. Some of these people have been my friends for years so I've put up with their snarky comments, telling me I'm misguided or confused and I'll come to my senses. I've put up with them ganging up on me and yelling in my face about how and why I'm wrong. I've put up with the constant Trump and Conservative bashing. But after these last two weeks of all of them pandering and virtue signaling I finally think I'm done. I've never heard a single of one them ever mention black inequalities or their concern for black lives. Some of them are posting ways to defund the police. I think I've hung on for so long because everyone I know is a liberal and if I stop hanging out with them, I'll have no friends left but at this point I would rather be friendless than surrounded by a bunch of mindless hypocrites.

That was around the exact time I noticed this shit starting to change too.
I was, and still am a liberal by definition... but these people aren't liberals. They're about as illiberal as you can be.
I understand though because my wife is going through exactly what you're going through right now from these last 2 weeks. She was like "holy shit honey you were right all along... this is going to be a war." which sort of feels good in a way because she's been calling me crazy and saying I've lost my mind with all the civil war stuff. Overall however, I'm actually really sad that I was correct.
But you're right, it it began to show when the left started de-platforming people on college campuses around 2013-14.
Around then, my long time asian friend (who grew up with white people in school and made far more money than me) started calling me a privilleged racist who couldn't ever understand anything and was a 'lost cause' because of the color of my skin.
I was like dude wtf... it's ME bro... the same person you've been friends with for nearly a decade... The only reason his "asianess" came up in conversation was because he did a funny bruce lee impression but it was fuckin funny... I never asked him to do it... he just DID IT himself. Other than that, we were both for the most part 'colorblind'.
Another one of my friends, who I heralded and looked up to as such a smart guy is completely gone. He's now one of the "Im moving out of the country if he wins reelection" TDS, types even though we both laughed our asses off at "grab em by the pussy" in 2015. He actually could laugh at things back then... not anymore.
It's like their gripped in a constant state of unease and hatred. Must suck... but yea he's gone now too. I didn't even have to break away... they just kinda left me and stopped contacting me.
Yes you're so right, I haven't changed my views on anything since I considered myself a liberal, except for abortion and I still wouldn't consider myself totally pro-life but they keep pushing further and further to left. There's so much craziness happening with the left they can't even seem to keep up with all of their own shit. I'm glad your wife finally came around, it is so validating when someone finally sees your side and agrees. That sucks about your friends, I hate that we are at a place where we can't be friends with people of different beliefs. I've been trying and it's so hard. Also, I'm a women and I still think grab 'em by the pussy is hilarious too.
Edit - Sorry this is sort of long...
Im also tangled in the same dilemma over abortion.
I was pro-choice when our expert biologists, embryologists and politicians agreed, for the most part, when the development passes a certain stage and that was the law.
Now, its up-to-birth in many democrat states and more keep pushing. There were even multiple proposals for POST-birth abortion... Which is just flat out murder of a living, out of the womb baby, and just thinking about it makes me want to post-birth abort the people who thought up, drafted and proposed such an idea.
Anyway, there are a lot of people like us who were left behind by the left. How could there not be? They just keep eating each other alive, cancelling themselves and destroy everything they touch.
The "right" is unified but I dont even consider us "the right". For instance im a millennial, athiest, classical liberal who still doesnt like most republicans like lindsay graham, romney, bush, mcconnel, and the other lifetime politicians.
I shouldnt fit in here right? Well i do because here we just love America, English common law, 1&2 amandments, our homes and families.
Good luck with your friends :) we can only hope they snap out of whatever spell theyre undersomeday.
Yes you just described me exactly! That's exactly what changed my mind it's like this is a fully grown baby what the hell are you doing? And then the way they celebrated it too was what I found truly disturbing. Before the 2016 election I admit I fed into the fear about Trump completely making it illegal but it wasn't a big enough concern for me to vote somewhere else. I still don't know if I really care if someone gets an abortion within a reasonable time frame but I know at this point I could never get one. I'm also an atheist and I find it crazy these days how often I'm defending organized religion. I also have tattoos and I love weed so I've always sort of felt like unsure if I belonged with the conservatives either but knowing how open minded everyone is here regardless of a few minor differences makes everything feel much better.
So many of us here fit the same description.
As of today, it no longer seems to be Republican vs Democrat but classical liberals vs collectivists.
When you have about 40 minutes to spare, watch this video. Evan Sayet is largly unknown, even here which pisses me off a little because he has found what has been dubbed the "grand unified field theory of liberalism".
Once you watch this video and understand how/why the modern liberal thinks the way they do, you'll understand everything they do and say.
You'll understand how and why they can tell everyone to stay home, except the rioters, looters, criminals and let a group of armed idiots take over a 6 block area in downtown Seattle and not only not find this problematic, but they openly celebrate it. You'll understand why they not only think killing actual new born babies is not only ok, but morally superior to not doing it.
Seriously, once you watch this... and I've watched it dozens and dozens of times over the last few years (it was given in 2007!!!!) because every single word is worth memorizing and internalizing, and the philosophy he describes shows itself more and more with every day that goes by.
heres the link again if you missed it in the text above the talk starts at 9:14 if you want to skip the intro/stuff
I'm especially irritated by rich minorities who want me to acknowledge my oppression of them. I live in a one bedroom apartment. I just finally paid off my student loan. I drive a Honda Fit, for God's sake.
And when Lebron James, who made his millions selling NIKE shoes made by slave labor, wants to lecture me about slavery 150 years ago, when he's got Chinese slaves, and sweatshops in Bangladesh making his corporate-logo crap right now... let's just say I'm not impressed.
