I realize it's a bit of a paranoid idea, and you might want to laugh at these people, but I can't blame two senior citizens for believing that something like that could happen. Hasn't CNN threatened to dox people before? I strongly suspect people are now, more than ever, lying to pollsters, because they see businesses burning on the TV, people getting fired, and they're scared that if they answer the wrong way, someone will come after them.
Can we really say that the media conducting these polls are above that?

Republicans have been lying to pollsters for a long time. I remember 2015-2016 seeing many many Trump supporters claiming they were going for Hillary to skew the polls.
I always answer online polls with false inputs that way. Keeps the left making stupid mistakes.

If you think about it, what happens when you get one of these phone calls. How do you know who it's from? It's a pretty fucked up situation, whereby people will try to cancel you or worse if you're not part of the mob.
I haven't answered a phone poll, or been called that I know of, but I'm guessing that all the pollsters calling are lefties and give off that vibe so people are much more likely to just be agreeable and try to be nice giving them the answers they want to hear.
The media is trash and so are their polls, so if you do get polled, you might as well mess with them.

I've been polled three times in the last 12 years. I'm just over 50 now, but I'll tell you that I've lied every single time about certain things including firearms ownership/presence, and who I'm likely to vote for.
Polling groups keep records of your phone number so that they don't double sample.
They are working off lists (purchased) of registered voters, and/or voters who have voted in recent elections so they literally know exactly who you are and where you live.
Because you gave the information to a polling agency you essentially waived any right to privacy you might have thought you had. None of that information including your name/address or individual answers to polling questions is protected by any law. Only by a verbal contract if they tell you they won't disclose your answers - and I've never been told that.

When someone calls and says they are taking a poll, you have no idea who they are.
Many times they are campaign workers trying to drum up money for their candidate. If you say things to indicate you would vote for their candidate, they hit you up for money.
But in an era where just saying you support the president can result in your firing, is it any wonder why conservatives refuse to participate in polls?
Don't get complacent. I remember 2012 and the "unskew the polls" meme. Turned out the polls were pretty close to the reported results.
