If there are four black guys on a stoop in do-rags with their underwear sticking out drinking booze from a brown paper bag, everyone - even other black people - are going to take that in, cross-reference it against everything they have experienced, and draw some reasonable conclusions from it about their own safety around such people. Another young black dude from the neighborhood is going to feel less threatened by them than, say, a young Asian girl. But if you put those same four black guys in suits and ties and have them standing around looking for the local sushi restaurant, all of our pattern recognition shifts to accommodate the new data. Now the Asian girl may no longer feel threatened by men in suits, but the young black dude in the do-rag might. This is all natural and how people navigate the world, and everyone is doing it ALL THE TIME.
