Easy mnemonic that works most of the time*: "loners" are male. Words that end in L, O, N, E, R, and S are masculine.
* "Most of the time" is sort of like English's rules where there are exceptions. Notable ones are dia, mano, and loan words from other languages aren't reliable.
Unfortunately there are those first gen Cuban American that don't get it.
Have a friend her family does but she doesn't.
She went and romanticized all the "old world" lifestyle there.
Just doesn't register that is what surviving destitution with grace looks like.
