Exactly, I imagine there is some type of law against that. For example, they can’t add 10 more random charges, like flu, aids, cancer, significantly bringing up your bill without your knowledge, then call the police on you when you refuse to pay those specific charges
Was it made clear that there would be a Covid 19 surcharge? Like a clearly posted sign or something? Because I think they have to tell you things like that up front.
That might be illegal. I think places like that have to tell you an extra charges like that before you order anything. Like when restaurants post signs saying parties of 6 or more will be automatically charged a 20% gratuity.
So what, fuck tipping, I side with Japan on this issue. If you work at a restaurant that pays you $2 an hour and expects to to make a living on tips you should quit. I'm not paying extra for you to do your fucking job.
Don't go out to eat if you don't tip. You're not changing the system you're just being an asshole. You should patronize restaurants that do operate the way you're describing if that's your opinion.
You said you can charge whatever you want, and the context is a surprise charge. This surprise charge is for a medical issue, so what’s to stop someone from adding a cancer surcharge.

^ This is the correct response / answer.
Not gonna have to tell me twice

I would have paid and tipped, but subtracted 2.99 off the tip for my own Covid surcharge.
I would refuse to pay it.
That's the server's name
Don’t leave a tip
Oh yeah. They definitely asked the wait staff their opinion on whether to do something like this.
That is a double-edged sword. (It's not the waiter/waitresses fault)

Covid-19 Tipping Deduction, standard policy
So you can sneak in a 150% charge for cancer, then call the police and have them arrested when they refuse to pay that charge? I doubt it

Don’t take it personally
Nobody bitching about a $7 well whiskey? That's a real crime.
Any place that charges me that will get dine-and-ditched.
$14 margarita!? Whew....
