Critical thinking and common sense says this is an absolutely retarded way to answer the question. But that and the "Southern Strategy" are their answers.
I haven't seen that question asked/answered. I'm sure it makes even less sense, if possible, than political parties just up and switching entire values/ideologies.
the argument made is that sometime (?) In the 1900s, i believe around the 50s or 60s? There was an almost uniform 'switch' between democrats and Republicans.
So they can claim that the Republican party formed to free rbe slaves is actually the democrat party of today. They get the good of the old, and "good" of the new, being a party of the "middle class and minorities."
It's a convenient band-aid filled with holes and inconsistencies. I remember looking into it myself and finding it to be bullshit.
There was an article I once had that I wish i could find again that showed the different arguments and inconsistencies I wish i could give you, it was a good read.
The year seems to change. 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. But it all comes down to Byrd, a lifelong Democrat who had ties to the KKK I believe.
Simple. Party switch.

Even if that were true (it’s not), why are they continuing to maintain the name of the pro-slavery party?
