When I see a statue, my first thought is "wow, someone created this amazing piece of art". Something within me responds to the beauty of that creation, to the effort and skill and craft required to generate such a thing, and with no regard for what it ostensibly "means". For me, beauty isn't the medium - it's the message.
For leftists trapped in the postmodernism of cultural Marxism, the statue must represent something more than craft or beauty. It must represent an idea, and if that idea is outdated or antithetical to leftist doctrine, then that statue is actually an attack. That statue must be destroyed.
And this is not an accidental or unintended byproduct of critical theory. This destruction is the goal.

They drafted soldiers, including boys, under penalty of death for desertion. So it's no surprise that many of the soldiers are poor boys forced to fight or be executed, and no surprise moms wanted statues of baby faced confederate soldiers put up.
