I remember hearing bits about how we were sympathetic to the nazis. And it's always leftists trying to hold it over our heads like it de-legitimizes American exceptionalism.
What I suspect happened was, they were probably still considered a leftist regime back then, so our pseudo-intellectuals probably thought the nazis were ahead of their time just for being socialists.
Then the left distanced themselves from the horrors of the holocaust and the nazis became right-wing extremists and America is now bad for a few leftist Americans having sympathized with them.
Just a guess. Maybe I should look up American attitudes toward them back in their hayday.
