I was also going to suggest something along these lines. Unfortunately, this kind of access point will always be a weakness, and addressing it sufficiently won't be cheap. It's one thing to deter a catburglar, but what do you about an angry mob that has plenty of time and isn't concerned about being detected? Unless you want to completely seal it off, this is a relatively inexpensive layer of protection that can at least buy you time to prepare your defense, and won't fall to pieces if you have to shoot through it. If you actually aim to prevent entry you'd be wanting a good security grille/gate, but now you're into the $1000+ range for something that can't be easily defeated. An alternative would be simply pulling out the door and remodeling, but that's still a decent expense for materials. If you don't mind sacrificing lighting/visibility you could always rivet on some sheet metal and cut out a couple of peepholes. It all really depends on your own risk assessment. I mean, we've got fuckers running around with forklifts, so you need to figure out how likely you are to come under siege and if your plan is to bug out or stay and fight.
I think you have a two or three point fix scattered below that will likely give you security without zero light or access:
Double security film, inside and out, on glass. Don't worry about the secure edges bit, not even a dedicated burglar is going to try and remove it, let alone looters or riots- and you may well have moved on if it starts to peel off over time.
A PAIR of lockbars, not wood or a rod but actual levered expand to lock metal- one in the lower runner and the second tight at the top- it's the jiggle and tilt block that a lower one may cover but may not.
Last is the more robust and time consuming one- and may cost the most to install and remove later: iron welded screen bolted to either interior plywood surround or exterior.
If the sgd models mentioned below are not available I have a potential fix idea: mount a pair with one slideable via iron runners top and bottom bolted to the wall as part of the imobile half. A centerlock bolt with key will secure it in place when closed as well.
Sad. I find regular grooming helps considerably, but I'm not an extreme allergic case. For me it's Old English Sheepdogs, in pairs!
Came home from work one day, put the dogs out as usual. They started barking... I checked and there was someone in the yard. Called the dogs back, but the guy, phone company, working on the box in our yard, had the cover to the box in his hands, held to use as protection, probably already s__t his pants.
As a woodworker, your idea is ok if it could be attached strongly enough and still be easy to move. I wonder if it’s an apartment, though. Can’t mung up the walls putting in brackets and shit.
I’m a retired contractor and the only real way to secure sliding glass doors is a roll down door. They are very expensive but give you almost impenetrable protection. They are also used in hurricane areas. There are lots of ways to keep them from being pried open or lifted off the track, but I’ve never seen a security door like you are describing.
Now you could get creative and sink a couple of steel poles in the ground and install chain link fencing immediately adjacent to the glass. Maybe put in a gate and heavy chain lock?

You'd have to contact them to make sure they'll sell to a US buyer, or details and shipping cost, but they do make one for sliding doors. I don't expect it to be cheap.
Probably wouldn't be cheap, but maybe worth the peace of mind -- security doors that look decorative, but are bars - just like for windows in bad neighborhoods. Maybe you could get the landlord to at least go 50/50 with you. S/he might be thrilled to get a deal on a security door that will remain when you leave. Worth a try.
There's film you can put on your window that will make it nearly unbreakable, saw those guys on It Takes A Thief do it like 20 years ago. They could take a baseball bat to it and it wouldn't break. As far as the sliding action, measure the length of rod you need and have one cut at a local hardware store. I don't know your specific model door so I can't say with certainty, but that is how most work.
Don't skimp on it, it protects all your stuff! Also, make sure once you've secured that point of entry, you identify the next weakest point and do that as well, and repeat.
You almost cant stop someone determined and out to get you but it will prevent any crime of opportunity.
You can always cut a 2 X 4 to fit along the rail to prevent from sliding. If someone shatters the glass though its useless. A while back I was looking at a clear window film that will prevent shattering. I don't know how effective it is, so you'd have to research the various vendors and price it for your application.
I did a search on DDG for "burglar bars for sliding doors" and had several come up in the images search. I've no clue on how expensive they are as I didn't follow the searches, but if you haven't found any made for sliding glass doors, that's a starting point.
Get a security film. 3M makes one as I see mentioned here already.
It will hold the glass together even when broken. My guess is you might as well put a layer on both sides. In and out. It would buy you time, but that’s it.
What the fuck is your problem? I can sure do that if you'd like, I barely used reedit for T_D when that was a thing. I think you're just being an apartment dwelling half-baby. Man up and get into home ownership and start a family
I wasn't even trying to strike a nerve before, obviously I think I did... I just thought your post looked like it was some sort of shit with being all panic and asking such obviously answerable questions

Ok so-

it looks like this and also slides open and shut, and locks
It takes a hell-of-a shot to break the glass. Put a snug fitting bar, wood or metal, into the track behind the closed door to prevent it from opening.
Here you go. They show it in the video going on a sliding door https://www.lowes.com/pd/Gatehouse-Security-Patio-Door-White-Steel-Double-Door-Security-Door-Common-64-in-x-81-in-Actual-67-in-x-80-5-in/1000550309

No idea if they will sell/ship to the US either, but maybe one of them can give you a lead on a US supplier if they don't.

This is the only thing that will keep people out. Anything else is a waste of effort and money. Sad to say.
Move

Rottweilers.
If you had a dog and someone breaks in, dog probably would be harmed. So just as well you can't have one.
I didn't downvote you, I was on another site.

Isn't there a film that can be placed over the glass that would at least encourage thieves to target another door?
Get permission from your landlord (in writing) if you do it.
No you
Easy boys
I was getting a little kick out of this guy for a little bit but will just move on. I said my peace
