You wouldn't have believed how loud we were in a tiny little practice room together!
So anyway when he was there he was playing for an Elvis Presley tribute artist. I had never heard of such a thing. I thought to myself "yeah I get it, you're working your way through school and are a teacher's assistant, but you'll never catch me dead doing that." It obviously served him well. So for 8 years I've been the musical director for an Elvis Presley tribute artist. Lol. My favorite part of all his recordings I've had to learn, arrange, and teach to an 8-piece band is where somebody in the crowd yells out "you're so white!" Elvis responds, "yeah, so?"
I can't tell you how many times in rehearsals if somebody's fishing for a note I have to tell them, "this is so white bread. Go for the obvious note." It gets boring but the crowds are amazing! And some of his songs are really good. This is the only time I've ever seen crowds like at Woodstock - except for seeing pics and video from (the original) Woodstock. We'll see if those crowds ever come back.
Meanwhile what I like to practice the most is Clifford Brown and Dizzy Gillespie, those guys were amazing! (I also play bass and keys, not bass in that band)

One of those rare singers you can tell feels every single word and note she sings. It resonates through all the tech of the recording process and emerges intact. Great story re yr music background...makes total sense! I had a childhood soaked in jazz from the 20's thru to the 50's, so totally get where you're coming from. I think this is one of the most astute (and simultaneously hilarious..) summations of African American Musical Cultural Enrichment of the World (yes, not anywhere near being their only major contribution, but one that is of stratospheric importance within that field of creative output nonetheless...).
