If you head towards TX via around Silver City & Carlsbad and drive straight across TX in line with Abilene, Ft. Worth, Dallas you could come here first then go up to your friend ~ or, when you leave the West coast head a bit more North straight to Springfield, MO. Then, after that you could literally come straight South to drop in here. Altho it'd be a long drive it wouldn't be brutal.
It's so cute that your coon comes in & out of your garage with babies. You won't believe it but in a small town near me there's an old Black guy who sells fish & game he bags...one of his homemade signs advertises alligator gar (a basically inedible fish out the bayou) and coon. Not sure, but I think he'll even cook it for you. Blecch. Don't get me wrong, I'd not pass it up if I were literally starving - but since I'm not, I'll pass lol.
You'll enjoy your drive across this beautiful country of ours once you get a couple days under your belt! It's like no other place in the world. And remember there are more good and kind people in America than not - don't let the MSM tell you any different! We travel all the time, and have never had a problem : )
Sounds like you have a good plan!
