Money is a symptom, not a cause, of candidate strength. If you are raising money hand over fist from supporters it means you have support. If you get money pumped in externally it does help you, but it isn't in itself an indicator of support.
The Dems learned this with Beta O'Rourke who was such a big deal for so long and is so not a big deal now that even in Austin, where I was surrounded by his name for two years, I had to stop and think to remember it just now. Most of his money came from outside Texas.
