They have a mental health service in Eugene, Oregon called CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets) that is dispatched through the police non-emergency number. They attend to random, non-violent homeless issues that come up frequently due to the enormous homeless population in that Democrat shit hole. They will call in the actual police though when things turn violent, which they often do. This bullshit is no different than the "community service" officers that police departments in California have been using for years. The issues come in when you don't have enough real police officers to handle real police work.
Drug raged crazies are responded to by unarmed officers?? My sides!!! Have any of these people worked retail or even just in the heart downtown of any decent sized city? This will go great watching the lowest end of the physical strength spectrum on the force go toe to toe trying to subdue someone with superhuman meth strength.
How about we send the cops, who then determine what the issue is and get social services involved if necessary? Way too many “mental health” episodes are very dangerous. Every major city has batshit crazy (frequently exacerbated by meth or other substances) homeless people roaming the streets.
In San Francisco? Man, San Fran can be rough! There are some seriously scary areas of San Fran. And there is lots of wealth. The wealthy people will hire their own security. Regular people will move out.
I got mugged in SF right outside my office door. I ran to a cop car that was about a block away, the officers were so kind. They put me in the back of their car and started cruising around the area to see if we could find the perps. No luck. But the cops drove me home and made sure I was safe.
Two months later I moved out of that homeless shit village aka SF.
Well, pretty soon some of these unarmed professionals will get shived or drug into a back ally. Then these unarmed professionals will either stay at home getting a big check from the state while doing nothing. Or, will want an armed escort.
For the latter, why don't we just empower these people to be armed in the first place?
I actually think this might be the best way forward. Make it so that advancement to Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain requires additional training and that an appropriate associates or bachelors degree is required/highly encouraged.
One of the problems is that we tried this in the 1970s targeting all police officers.
Having police officers act more like average professionals worked okay in the suburbs and other middle to upper class areas. But in other areas, where lots of the crime was happening, the police officers lacked authority and felt they were unable to effectively control criminals. Hence this practice in the United States was abandoned in the late 70s and 80s.
I kind of suspect that most of the people pushing for this kind of policing lived in the suburbs or have parents of the professional class. And having a police officer dressed in a sports coat would be fine, where 99% of the time, people aren't violent. But, when you get out of this area, and people are more violent, a more violent answer must be given.
I don't dismiss the concept out of hand. In the last few years we have seen too many stories of people in a mental health crisis shot by police who are not trained how to help them. Similarly, schools calling armed police to handle a child who has bitten his chicken finger into the shape of a 'gun' is also not a good option.
That said, I think having people trained in mental health intervention, or school discipline issues would be a good idea to AUGMENT the police, not replace them.
This will explode the police budget. Now instead of having 1-2 officers show up, you will need a 3rd person. Watch, this is a jobs program for social studies (gender studies) into positions of power. The exact same thing that happened to HR will now happen in law enforcement. This will not end well.
