If you start on it early enough, the zinc isn't necessary, but we're talking inside the first 3-4 days, which almost no studies have even looked at.

Chloroquine (and similar compunds, like Hydroxychloroquine) have been demonstrated to be zinc ionophores. It's the zinc that suppresses viruses.
