It literally is making a thought illegal. If you hate veterans, but fire them without saying you hate veterans or otherwise demonstrating that hatred, that is legal. If you hate veterans, make it publicly known, then fire a veteran, you just did something illegal.

If you beat up a mexican, but don't call them a wetback, that is a normal assault. If you beat up a mexicun, and call them a wetback, that is a hate crime assault. The thought is what makes the crime.

That is the whole problem with these laws. They are subjective and inneffective.

Literally not true. Let's say you employee a veteran. Let's say it's public knowledge that you don't like veterans. Let's say the veteran you hired murdered your wife.

It's definitely not illegal in that situation to fire the veteran.
