Before the forged BC he had a "Certificate of Live Birth" which is not the same. His grandma could have gone to the state and sworn to the circumstances. Comparing the CLB and BC, they are very similar otherwise.
I never believed the BC stuff when it was pushed back when he ran. But I recently saw a video of him prior to being president where he was younger talking about his home being Kenya. I don't know what to think anymore.
