The Chinese have an enormous domestic market, and if they pursue a domestic standard ahead of the world, they could potentially be ready to deploy "standardized" products ahead of the rest of the world. The US and Europe would have no say in these standards.

An example is the original BellCore telephonics standard, which was just the engineering book from Bell Labs and Western Electric on how Bell did telephones. There was no standards committee, just a monopoly trying to build reproducable products. When the Bell System was broken up, the many companies benefitted from a "standard" already in place. There was nothing compatible between US and European telephone equipment.
