There was the case in Orlando a few years ago where a caregiver, lying on the ground with his hands up, begging police not to shoot his client, playing with a toy, was shot.

When asked, the cop said I don’t know why I shot him.

I quit trying to defend the police after that.

If we expect good police to go into slums and do their jobs, we have to accept a few will warp. If we don't stand by them after they crack, we shouldn't be sending them in at all, and no sane cop would go.

Yeah, the caregiver incident was very messed up, cop afterwards tried to say he was protecting the guy he shot....

Yeah, weed out the psychopaths before they become cops, and fix cop cowboy and wolf pack culture. But, protect and isolate those that develop PTSD on the job.

Video of OP's incident for anyone curious.

There's also the cases of Daniel Shaver, Duncan Lemp, and the couple in Texas that were murdered by a group of crooked cops in a military-style "no knock" raid.

I'm done defending police. If they had gotten rid of their bad apples years ago then this wouldn't be such a big issue.

My take on police is this, they aren't all bad.

But they and my roles in society are vastly different, they are also doing a job. If they pull you over and don't write you a ticket they have just wasted a bunch of time; they know that. They also know how much of each ticket they write, and since they are public employees salaries are public info, its some very basic math to figure out what your ticket "quota" needs to be.

Even when treating the cops respectfully they twist things. The first thing I said once after getting pulled over for rolling a bit through a 3 way stop no one was at was "Sorry I guess I should have come to a complete stop." NVM the fact that they rolled through it too because its more like a road with a turn than a 3-way stop but whatever.)

Do you think they were reasonable? No, and every interaction I've ever has been the same. They are on the job and the job is to find you doing something wrong. They aren't being paid to be your friend.

That said, I don't think the issue is that they need to be defunded. I don't think they need to send social workers, I'm actually more surprised with as many people as there are and number of police interactions the number of deaths isn't much higher, so I'm not convinced there is even much of a brutality problem.

But they are literally paid to find people doing stuff wrong not be your friend.
