But they and my roles in society are vastly different, they are also doing a job. If they pull you over and don't write you a ticket they have just wasted a bunch of time; they know that. They also know how much of each ticket they write, and since they are public employees salaries are public info, its some very basic math to figure out what your ticket "quota" needs to be.
Even when treating the cops respectfully they twist things. The first thing I said once after getting pulled over for rolling a bit through a 3 way stop no one was at was "Sorry I guess I should have come to a complete stop." NVM the fact that they rolled through it too because its more like a road with a turn than a 3-way stop but whatever.)
Do you think they were reasonable? No, and every interaction I've ever has been the same. They are on the job and the job is to find you doing something wrong. They aren't being paid to be your friend.
That said, I don't think the issue is that they need to be defunded. I don't think they need to send social workers, I'm actually more surprised with as many people as there are and number of police interactions the number of deaths isn't much higher, so I'm not convinced there is even much of a brutality problem.
But they are literally paid to find people doing stuff wrong not be your friend.
My take on police is this, they aren't all bad.
