Some dates just for the fun of it:

The slave trade was started in the southern hemisphere by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar, governor of New Spain, and in the northern hemisphere by Sir John Hawkins of Her Majesty's Navy.

The former died 1524, the latter 1595.

Jamestown was settled 1607, Plymouth 1620. Independence declared 1776, the US constitution ratified 1787, importation of slaves banned 1807.
