If it wasn't for the civil guard protecting this guy (I don't know that he was one of them, but it doesn't really matter) he might well have been beaten to death before the police arrived. If they were on his side they would have already been there. Yours is all good advice, but if you really want to protect yourself the best thing to do is stay as far away from these animals as you can.

Actually shooting someone is a crime with an affirmative defense. You have to be able to demonstrate that self-defense was applicable. It's not applied automatically just because you feel it is. If you shoot someone, you will be arrested. If you flee, you will be arrested for fleeing the scene of a crime. Please don't encourage bad legal advice.
