They really didn't. The Democrats started peddling in hand-me-outs and identity politics.
Democrats pretty much own just about every racist institution in this country. Slavery? Democrats. Opposition to both Civil Rights Acts (1870s and 1960s)? Democrats. The KKK? Democrats. Jim Crow laws? Democrats. Poll taxes? Democrats. Segregation? Democrats. The list goes on and on....
