You do understand that most of these are, more often than not, congresscritters out looking for bigger campaign donations. Microsoft learned this lesson in the late 1990s (they went from 1-2 lobbyists with a few bucks in 1997, to having a near-army of them and a massive lobbying budget by 2001.)

24
Toughsky_Shitsky 24 points ago +25 / -1

Yes. It's a shake-down. No legislation with any legal teeth will pass once Big Tech "donates" to their favorite corrupt pol - of both parties.

7
b9k9 7 points ago +7 / -0

My thought is the right represents the traditional bourgeois middle class that historically supports whatever existing paradigm happens to exist at the time.

It doesn't even have to be a capitalistic system; under communism, we would have been called apparatchiks. Bottom line - conservatives under any system are the "winners", so they have everything to lose.

The losers are the disenfranchised with literally nothing at stake. Since they're not part of the professional class, there are also emotional & intelligence differentials at play.

Bottom line is that the under-class are the change agents. I've even come to believe that the so-called "greatest generation" were simply that era's antifa losers drafted into the military and trained to fight.

The winners would have been either officers, and/or engineers/production managers in logistics & planning for the various armaments industries.

However, this all being said, the left will need more institutional influence if they wish to succeed. Revolutions almost always tend to fail, simply because the moneyed interests ultimately determine whether or not it's in their collective interest to support/abandon.

6
DeplorableCentipede 6 points ago +6 / -0

How much more institutional influence do they need? All the big corporations support them even after getting their stores torched.

0
Calico_fox 0 points ago +1 / -1

That's all lip-service meant to placate Leftists and nothing else, in reality they'd need a incredibly vast war chest to fund a successful revolution (guns, food, vehicles, fuel, clothes. etc) which some like Soros wouldn't be able to fund entirely.

(Hell, the donations their currently getting aren't enough ether)

4
KekistanPM 4 points ago +4 / -0

Totally. Heard one leftist say there's no federal solution for covid (apparently completely forgetting about the guidelines and thinking GEOTUS has to baby every state to normalcy). Heard another say the "second wave" in town was caused by greedy business owners, and had nothing at all to do with the riots.

The left always plays their only card, which is propaganda. Consider their base is comprised in general of not only the less intelligent (except for intellectual theorists), as well as more highly charged emotionals.

So it makes perfect sense to utilize all forms of media in an attempt to mold, direct and influence cultural movements within this segment of the population.

It's not even necessary for a respective industry leaders (Goolge, FB, et al) to begin operations as left-wing tools. Rather, once a dominant leader is identified, financial control can be enacted to then further groom and shap for direct political purposes.

This pattern consistently repeats throughout history - it really is the same old, same old.

The job of the right wing is to hold fast; this is a marathon, not a sprint. The advantage almost always lies with the defenders. All you need is resources, discipline and motivation to prevail.

Why would EU’s judicial system give one fuck about a US law?

2
Italians_Invented_2A 2 points ago +2 / -0

What is this?

The EU judges them according to its own laws.

The EU stood up against big tech several times, we have to give them that.

2
ThomasGiferson 2 points ago +2 / -0

O.K. That's interesting. But how far are they going to get in US courts? Sec 230 is not "international law". It's US law.

2
SheikFromMozambake 2 points ago +2 / -0

Your point is well taken. But I can't help but think that the current climate of big tech censorship backfires on the censors. It's pure evil, and some folks are fooled by it, but plenty of folks see through it now and are incensed by it. Everyone in that last group will show up to vote for Trump and to take the House back. The folks who are oblivious to the censorship are just generally oblivious; they may or may not vote.

Remember when it came out that facebook was manipulating the newsfeeds of people who exhibited signs of mental illness to see if they could lessen or intensify the symptoms? It’d be a shame if they were opened up to some sort of class action lawsuit over performing psychological experiments on their users without said users’ express knowledge or consent.

Anecdotally, i would see a lot of warnings over my friends' post over the last three months over things that weren't offensive. I haven't seen the warning to see "offensive" content over similar posts in the last two weeks.

2
Italians_Invented_2A 2 points ago +2 / -0

I read the article from that far left rag, and what does it say? That pressure is mounting on Zuck to censor more, not less.

I hope what you're saying is right (I don't have Facebook so I don't know).

10
ignorant_slob 10 points ago +10 / -0

I’m genuinely not sure of what the proper legislation is to ensure liberty is preserved. No one should be forced to bake a cake or wax some balls, but a near monopoly certainly has a higher obligation. Can Visa and MasterCard refuse your business if you are outed as a churchgoer or firearm owner? Does this obligation happen when forming a corporation or do they merely have to be large enough?

3
Italians_Invented_2A 3 points ago +3 / -0

Simple. Like you're saying, big businesses need to be held at a higher standard so non discrimination laws must apply only to them.

2
aspen 2 points ago +2 / -0

,

0
ignorant_slob 0 points ago +1 / -1

That is a great point about service and customer, especially for smaller businesses. If some LARPer walked in to my local Jewish deli dressed in a SS uniform, I believe they should be able to refuse service. If that same person was refused service because they donated to a campaign of someone who didn’t disavow nazis to an arbitrary standard of disavowal, that should not be okay. This is even more important for business with national scope.

0
Eu-is-socialist 0 points ago +1 / -1

Anti trust laws have to be enforced. But wont. And second people need to stop patronizing businesses that are against their interests. But again wont.

7
MarcusAurelius 7 points ago +7 / -0

Personally, I'd make it if a social media company has more than 1% of the US population with accounts that can contribute, it should be considered as the public square with similar first amendment protections.

Twitter, Facebook, Google would all be subject to this.

That is to say, any lawful media posted to Twitter, Facebook, Youtube should be generally available to any adult present in the United States who opts to view it.

I agree that there is an enforcement problem of anti trust laws. Sure.

But realize that any competitor will be at a massive disadvantage re capital both financially and per their already existing user base. And that is before Big Tech can just copy the competitor, write a check and buy them up or censor them outright after their media alies smear them. That is insurmountable unless there is some huge technological change.

Not sure why your getting down voted by zealots who don't believe in America first but rather if you don't agree with everything Trump's cabinet does then you are wrong. Mind blowing collectivist mindset.

Go for it, make them earn it every year. If they want the immunity they have to prove they are section 230 compliant. Else they can live and function like everyone else.

Good idea. Should have happened in 2017

Didn't they already do this?

No, you are just remembering the last time they looked into a proposal.

"rolling back" does not sound strong enough.

Hawley or Scott - we need a bill that allows certain career employees to be audited financially. We know large corporations have corrupted career employees. FOIA is usually limited. We should have the power to identify corruption.

I'll probably get some heat for this but Zuck is infinitely better than most of these guys. IMHO it would be smart to work with that but I doubt it'll happen.

And the House won't, so this is a waste of time.

This also inadvertently solves the lack of journalism in America which is a huge source for all of our woes today.

“Propose,” “thinking about,” “will discuss,” “in preliminary talks to,” “gathering information about,” “leaning towards,” “studying.” Our DOJ and our illustrious AG sure are amazing aren’t they folks? Being a conservative is about 6 months away from being a jailable offense in this country but our DOJ/AG and their crack team of pearl clutchers are hard at work making sure conservatism isn’t banned at least until Christmas.

Well you have like 4-5 months, if there is even a country left after that.
