Yesterday I made this meme and today it came true: they killed off Ben and also the cream-of-wheat mascot. When I was a kid I would look forward to every pancake Sunday, and Mrs. Buttersworth was always there with me. I insisted we buy the bottle in the shape of the nice lady. I never knew she was black, I just felt she was one of my Aunts. I have so many fond childhood memories of her. Do people not understand that even 150 years ago racial mascots were the first step toward a more inclusive society? Some kid growing up in a foreign town would finally see a mascot who looked like him... do liberals have any idea how important this step was? To be represented and accepted even if you look different from the average kid. I got into several extremely heated arguments about this topic about 5 years ago with some liberal coworkers. It was over a mascot named Sambo, who had dark skin. They never understood my point - they said "it was always racist to use his face, they just didn't know it yet." I asked "well is Mrs Buttersworth racist then?" and they told me "of course not."
