Symbols tend to mean different things in different situations, and the Stars and Bars are a good example of that. My job has taken me all over the US, and I've seen it flying in a lot of different places. If I see it flying out in front of someone's house in rural Alabama or Georgia, there's a fair chance they're just proud of their family and local heritage. Especially if the Stars and Stripes is flying right next to it. If I see it flying on someone's property in Illinois or Indiana, though? Yeah, there's probably a better chance of a suspiciously holey white pillow case somewhere in that house...
