In Judaism today ger means convert. Takes on a whole different meaning. "Do not oppress a convert because you were converts in Egypt." While they were in Egypt they undoubtedly did follow Egyptian religion. So they are being told to not oppress converts to Judaism....yet they still do. Converts are 3rd class citizens in their religion.
