I have never heard of it, and my company sent us an email two days ago saying we all get Friday off to reflect upon racism in America. I will be working the full day.
Juneteenth is the day in 1865 that a yankee landed in Galveston, Texas and announced Emancipation, took 21/2 years for word to get down here.
Internet was throttled way down back then, so that was the first anyone here knew about it.
It used to be taught in our history classes here, always been a holiday of sorts, blacks especially threw celebrations. It changed a few decades ago, race-baiters started using it to foment racial tensions, it kinda morphed into a Black Beach weekend here near Galveston. But race-baiters incited thugs who caused many businesses to close up because of shoplifting and other crimes, which led to charges of racisms and more race-baiting...
But it is legit. POTUS thought to honor that, is all, because while it was Texas, neighbor States also accepted it for what it is. It is understandable people not from down here don't know; I mean, I have no idea when Ohio heard about Emancipation, or Alaska. For that matter, just off the top of your head... who remembers when the Magna Carta was signed?
Because of Juneteenth many folks have a day in mind where they celebrate Freedom, like the 4th of July or Christmas, sorta.
Heck, ask a Mexican what Cinco de Mayo celebrates, see if they know.
Also, Magna Carta Libertatum, commonly called Magna Carta, is a charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on June 15th, 1215.
Thanks, yeah you are correct, it is of another woman.
My bad, mea culpa.
The story of Aracely is true tho.
'Floyd pleaded guilty in 2009 to aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. He was not charged with kidnapping or assault.
According to the complaint in the case, filed in 2007, Floyd was one of six men who forced his way into the Houston home that Aracely Henriquez shared with Angel Negrete and a 1-year-old child.
One of the men claimed to be from the water department in order to get Henriquez to open the door. Then Floyd, who was described as the biggest of the men who pulled up in a black Ford Explorer, forced his way in and “placed a pistol against the complainant’s abdomen, and forced her into the living room,” the complaint says. It doesn’t say whether or not Henriquez was pregnant.
Floyd then searched the house while another man guarded Henriquez. That man hit her in the “head and side areas” with his pistol after she “screamed for help,” the complaint says.
So, while Floyd did plead guilty to a charge stemming from the invasion of Henriquez’s home, the picture circulating with the claim doesn’t show Henriquez and the claim distorts the details of the case.'
We do, but you asked 'why not' as if you just now thought up the idea...
So let me offer some examples of 'why not', just being Devil's advocate since you appear to be needing help.
Maybe, one 'why not' here, maybe slaves who were ignorant didn't know about the 4th of July but did hear of Juneteenth.
Or maybe they immediately thought to celebrate both days, extra reason for barbecue.
Or maybe Juneteenth marks a different sort of Freedom than the 4th of July, maybe it reflects the difference between a Free Nation and a Free Man.
Or it could be as simple as the ex-slaves want to celebrate it just to irritate you.
Think of it as the difference between 240KV and 240 volts, one is much more powerful than the other but both basically same/same.
I don't get this... why are more and more people calling to make a holiday that relates specifically to the state of Texas something all states should now be celebrating???? Enough with this nonsense!
It definitely isn't some new thing.... I'm sorry for the people who have never heard of it.
Just about anyone who's lived in the deep south their whole life should definitely know about it.... even if they don't know it by name theysure as fuck have seen the day that it happens on because there are fish frys, barbecues, and yards full of cars galore.....
I just checked the holiday calendar on my phone the other day because I wanted to know if Father's Day was this weekend or next and Juneteenth was definitely not on there. I checked just now and its been added, apparently its a big holiday now, or the left just wants another day to virtue signal.
I remember growing up, the excitement I would feel on Juneteenth Eve! knowing that the next morning we would all come running down the stairs to sit around the Juneteenth Tree and open our reparations baskets!
Then Grandma and Grandpa would come over and we'd all have the traditional Juneteenth Goose with cranberry sauce and mac and cheese! What wonderful memories!
I'm so glad Apple doesn't bother with putting that stupid East-star holiday on my calendar any more. Who ever heard of that noise!
From what I understand, Black Conservatives convinced him to change the date. I'm of the mindset that you give an inch and the Left takes the highway, but it is what it is and if he changed the date because his black supporters asked then I'm okay with it, as if my opinion matters.
Never in my life have the democrats feared that blacks wont vote for them, except for this year.
You forgot all the other race wars that were started during election seasons.
I have never heard of it, and my company sent us an email two days ago saying we all get Friday off to reflect upon racism in America. I will be working the full day.
Had leadership tell us, "it's for reflection. You have the day off, so reflect. Don't care what on, just reflect I guess."
Heard about it from some racists blacks in high school and then never heard of it again for 20 years until last week.
Never happens. Kwanzaa doesn’t include any new shit.
Never heard of it until Trump's announcement either, but banks are already closing
Watch them still process payments, but not deposits.
Alright, dumb question, but what the hell is Juneteenth?

Wow. All great info. Thanks.
Her name was Aracely Henriquez.
Also, Magna Carta Libertatum, commonly called Magna Carta, is a charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on June 15th, 1215.
lmao "Juneteenth" is about the dumbest name for something I've heard in a long while.
Be careful, that picture is not of Aracely Henriquez.

This^ legit thing in Oklahoma too
Why not just celebrate freedom on Independence Day, which is of course on the fourth day of another month that starts with the letter J, called July?

Anniversary of the last slave being freed.
Thanks.

Juneteenth - the day the REPUBLICAN president frees the Democrats slaves
I honestly thought it was some Biden gaffe
It definitely isn't some new thing.... I'm sorry for the people who have never heard of it.

Isn't it also the day of the front porch couch rotation with the couch in the living room?
WTF Is a Juneteenth? Is it like a Sweet16?
Which program did you go with?
Well, if I don't see you online tomorrow, Happy Kwanza!
Juneteenth is very regional. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY up here that I know in the PNW had a clue.
The pander, it burns. Now let us watch as corporations and people who never heard of this before shame those who are confused

It's an election year.

Slash Ess
Last year Google told me it was National Falafel Day. Why is Google suddenly supporting black people and shunning "Asians"? That's racist!
That's because this is a made up appeasement holiday in the hopes that a bunch of losers don't burn down the country.
Didnt hear about until this year. If i did it was so low key i didn't remember.
That's be cause it's only really celebrated in Texas.
Way to co-op a Texas holiday you fuckers!
It's a TEXAS THING. News of the emancipation took awhile to get down here and they.werent sure what day it was so they called it June teenth.
Must've been an old reminder before GEOTUS moved his rally date. It's Saturday pede!
I just saw that on my calendar as well. Never even heard of it before President Trump was going to have a rally on that day.
From what I understand, Black Conservatives convinced him to change the date. I'm of the mindset that you give an inch and the Left takes the highway, but it is what it is and if he changed the date because his black supporters asked then I'm okay with it, as if my opinion matters.
Epic comment. Top Kek.
