We really need to know what the stepmother has to say. I feel like the comments have a pretty good hunch about what actually may have happened. The last few sentences indicate she used her freedom of speech in the workplace, probably to defend her son, as the timing of her firing is awfully suspicious.

is ambiguous at best. Some employees may feel that way on the sole basis she was a relative of the cop. It is similar to taking offense, it is subject to interpretation and varies for everyone. Given the timing, i am very cynical about the motives for the firing.
