It is important to acknowledge that all sides use this tactic. "Make America Great Again" is an innoccuous unassailable Motte argument. It also stands for very specific policies on immigration, the Bailey, on which reasonable minds can differ, and where compromise is possible.

Our country desperately needs open and public debate on a variety of issues. We just yell at each other nowadays. I think the fault lies more in the left than in the right, but we need to change people's minds if we are to succeed.

We do not need more open-air protests and rallies. We need more open-air honest debates. Watching a debate on television is not the same as being there in person, where the the audience can speak to each other as well as watch the speakers.

Website comment sections just do not work for this function. Partisans rig the game.

I think the worst effect of corona lockdowns is that it impedes this necessary function of democracy. Online is no substitute for in person, as my wife explained to me when I suggested people can buy clothes online.
