On June 25 CA Assembly will vote to repeal Proposition 209 (1996), which prohibits the state from discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.
ACA 5 passed the California State Assembly on June 10, 2020, and was sent to the California State Senate. If approved, it would ultimately lead to a fall 2020 ballot proposition to voters asking voters to approve the constitutional amendment to repeal Proposition 209's provisions.
Slowly but surely they are moving the goalposts from equality to equity. Equality is providing equal opportunity to all. Equity, on the other hand, is equal outcome for all. It requires open and systemic discrimination to force equal outcome.

Apparently 65% of CA registered voters approve of affirmative action (of course they do). A similar measure last time was shot down by very vocal Asian moms.
