Basically someone floods a site with requests that look legit but aren’t. So along with real traffic like you and I, you have millions of fake connections done by computers with the only intent being to prevent us from connecting or to overload the server to take it offline.
The browser check thing is part of trying to filter out the bots from the real users.

DDosing is a “Denial of Service” attack.
