There are a handful of reasons this page can appear.. including the manager of the domain setting it to show up. This page appearing does not automatically mean there's an attack taking place.
What exactly is a DDOS attack?
Distributed denial of service attack, basically pinging the web server so much it can't handle all the requests.
Is the tech or coding involved with DDoS protection fairly advanced? What a great service to provide anyway.
It can be, because hackers can control machines from around the world, so it can be very difficult to tell what is real. That’s why Cloudflare was created. They can analyze all the traffic and use machine learning to determine real vs fake. Pretty cool.

Last DOS stands for denial of service, I understand it as overloading a network/service with a lot of users/clients to prevent others from accessing said network/service.
It stands for Distributed Denial of Service.
They hack a bunch of computers to get control of them, then they have the computers constantly spam garbage requests at a web site. This has two effects it overloads the website's servers and saturates the network connection close to the server. Both of these can prevent legitimate users from accessing the website.

Its just another bullshit obstacle that will prevent people from accessing us. Its a form of censorship via creating an inconvenient obstacle for an outsider.
I also share with others. Some of whom are not so tech savvy. Creating a login is, sadly, a barrier to entry for them.
If creating an account is a barrier of entry for you then you need to learn basic computing skills. It's fair and most places you can find free computer classes or for cheap. It's not hard.

That's not what it's checking, this is CloudFlare running scripts to gather some information about your computer. It's fairly innocuous data to help identify bots vs. legitimate people.
The full details of what the check entails isn't divulged, but I would expect that the details can vary depending on probability scores based on initial data gathering and traffic patterns from the network origin. When a connection comes in from what is more likely to be a bot, they may even request that computationally expensive scripts run to make bots more costly to operate.
Web browsers do divulge a great deal of uniquely identifying data under most circumstances. Not data to put your personal name on a connection, but often enough to identify a single computer. The EFF's Panopticlick project can show some of this information to you and explains how it can be used for tracking.
I assumed it was checking for an account based on the comment I replied to. I know that websites often take enough info to identify your computer. I use a canvas blocker to try and avoid that. Not sure how effective it really is.

Sometimes. It acts weirdly. Like if I upvote, the number resets to zero, but if I downvote, it goes to negative one(regardless of starting number). When I reload the page, sometimes it works and sometimes doesn’t. I thought I was just flagged as a bot or something.
Yeah if I upvote or downvote anything and then reload, the vote just disappears. Weird.

What an honor to have so many people wanting to shut us down for being positive and proud of our country. I’ve had bots attack my little old site, and we use cloudflare as well, but nothing of this magnitude.
