I went to a juneteenth event back in 98. They held it every year in that city. It was never really a huge event -- basically a concert with a few speakers and lots of food.

From my understanding, some Black communities in the South celebrate it (I had to ask a black friend from Texas to verify), but for most of the country, it's unheard of. I've lived all over the Southwest and in my 36 years have never heard of Juneteenth until Trump's rally was announced.

I didn't know about Juneteenth being celebrated until last week. That's only because certain left-wing entities decided it could be used to smear Trump. If it becomes a federal holiday that I get off work, I'm good with it. However, nobody should be pretending this was ever a significant day of the year.

I’m fine with a new holiday to commemorate when Republicans freed the slaves against the will of Democrats

Just because you didn't know about something, doesn't mean it didn't exist.

I never said it I didn't think it existed, hence why celebrated was italicized - meaning that I was surprised to learn it was celebrated.

In any case, it was never important to be marked in most calendars until it was useful for attacking Trump. Google didn't even have a doodle for it in 2019. For some reason, after existing for 155 years, Juneteenth became important enough for Google to acknowledge in 2020. If a liberal company like Google didn't think to virtue signal over this before now, odds are it was obscure.

Probably unpopular opinion but... This should also serve as a reminder that political systems are perfectly happy with corrupting legitimate events into a petty holiday for the sake of control/suppression intensely stares at Christmas and Easter and the questionable history and pagan rituals associated with them. Stick to the holy days prescribed by God himself in the good book and stop worrying about these fluid materialistic days

Brain say: "Gimme day off and free money."

Brain should say "every Christmas, I am living in a shut down country as everyone takes time to celebrate the Birth and life of Jesus with family. No matter how hard I try to avoid it it's impossible and I'm forced for better or worse to acknowledge why."

Brain should question what kind of damage could be possible if the wholesome meanings of holidays are erased while we only keep the pagan traditions alive and we add even more pointless and worldly holidays to the mix

Yours is obviously the position with more principal behind it. My only thought was I want money and the day off.

But you're exactly right.

This timeline is too absurd at this point

Even if it's going to be a real holiday, why wouldn't you want to rally to celebrate on a day slaves were freed?

Short answer is that Democrats are the party of death and misery. They celebrate that there was American slavery, not celebrating that it ended.

Anyway, a more appropriate day for national holiday might be in mid-September when the Emancipation Proclamation was actually made.

And who better to rally than a Republican president on that day?

How come Obama never gave Juneteenth speech or even mentioned it? Barry must be a racist or perhaps this Juneteenth is revisionist bullshit.

It has existed in Texas. I wish Pedes would quit posting shit like this. To pretend that NO ONE CARED, is bullshit. It's celebrated here in Texas- Moreso in some parts than others. This seems like a stupid fucking hill to die on. It makes more sense to pint out people observing it in states that it didn't exist.

I'm not trying to die on any hills. I think we should embrace it. Make it a national holiday.

I just find it hilarious it wasn't really a thing until it was a thing to bash Trump with.

This will be on our Google calendar for 4 more years, and then it will disappear like it was never a real thing.

*Typos corrected and archived. I might post this next year if I remember.

Ask why the Dems and BLM were not celebrating on New Years day to remember 01/01/1808 per the 1787 law.

An old friend who doesn’t talk to me anymore because of my politics posted “It’s about time! Let’s do this!” on his social media, and it’s taking everything in me not to reply “You didn’t even know what Juneteenth was until 2 minutes ago.”

Give me strength, pedes.
