Some do. I’m not going to stop offering a hand up because I’ve seen a lot of really good people with really shitty background rise from the inner city and make something of themselves.

Offer a way up and out.

I agree completely but do believe in the necessity for a hard line in the sand. I believe in helping those that want to help themselves. A student wants to repeatedly interrupt class to show off her shit dancing? Fuck it, permanently suspend her and let her figure out her commute to the nearest school that will take her. She has no right to drag down the students around her.

Right now it sounds like the only way out these kids see is through the media they consume - modern rap for example. They emulate success they see as obtainable. We need to illustrate that success, real genuine success that is more than some heavily engineered and plastic pop icon that is pretty much impossible to reach (so we’re talking medical doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc.), is achievable by having the ones that want to reach for it have their chance to aim for it. And you do that by removing the cancerous environment that surrounds them, by removing the noise and letting them focus if they so choose.

I’m a believer in extending the olive branch, but it’s on the other party to grasp it.

It's not enough to avoid ghettos and leave them alone. They want to take from us. I'll tell them what they told the teacher in the post
