Crabucket is real. Head Start is a program that filters-out decent kids who behaive and try as well as those who are just smart at the 10-12th grade level. Not all the kids are college-bound in this program, but many can excel with 2-year or trade degrees - far more than anyone else in their schools. Just for trying they face being ostracized by their friends, neighborhoods, schools, and even parents and siblings. One girl had the grades and motivation and wanted to become a nurse - her family basically disowned her because they thought, that she thought, she was too good for them because of her chosen path...
What is "crab bucket"? I keep seeing it mentioned, but don't know what it is.
This reminds me of a book I had to read for school, called "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian." It's about an Indian kid who leaves the reservation school to attend a better school a couple miles away. The other kids on the reservation mocked, belittled, and practically disowned him for it, but he still tried and succeeded anyway.
"Crab bucket" is a metaphor that is used when you are describing a situation where one person is trying to rise above their situation and the rest of the group trys to pull that person back down to their level. If you ever go crabbing and put your catch into a crab pot, or bucket, you will see how, when you try to take one crab out of the bucket, the rest will latch on to the crab that you are trying to remove; sometimes ripping a claw or leg off of the crab that is being taken out.
