Fresh out of college, I taught phys ed in a 98% black school for 1.5 years. Very similar circumstances.
A first grade class at the school gave me anxiety. The behavior was terrible. Lining up and staying quiet in the hallways never happened. The children did what they want and laughed at any attempt at correction. No "real" consequences occurred either. This breeds and fosters a challenging of authority in which nothing negative happens. This is not the case with police officers!
Students would run from the line out to the gym, and while attempting to correct PE became a 50 minute break for the teacher, while I tried to mitigate the damage done to his classroom. The only actions that gathered a response was yelling and screaming. Even then, they thought I was funny.
My meeting with the assistant principal was different. This woman wrote her dissertation on the systemic oppression of black women within education. "These are black kids, Mr. Fastestdon. You've got to get loud with them and show them you mean business." What a horrible welcome to the profession.
