Growing up in the south, we always called the Confederate battle flag the "rebel flag", and it symbolized rebelling against corrupt government, or rebelling against society in general, not letting those with illegitimate claims to authority tell you what to do. It never had any racial connotations, at least in my circle of friends.
NASCAR was born from stock car racing, which itself was born from bootleggers during prohibition (corrupt government overreach) holding races with their suped up cars (used to transport illegal alcohol, and escape the police). So that rebel attitude has kinda permeated the sport from the beginning, and of course the sport was always more popular in the south.
Slavery and secession were legal at that time, even in the north. Lincoln just declared war on the new nation, and once he defeated them in a long bloody war, forced them back into the union as conquered land, and then slavery was abolished nationwide at the Federal level. Lincoln was not a staunch abolitionist, and admitted he'd keep the institution intact if it would make the Confederate States rejoin the Union. I'm not saying secession over the looming abolitionist movement was a laudable reason to leave the Union, but it was perfectly legal for them to vote as states to do so.
Neither slavery nor secession were constitutional (legal) at the time. It was simply not adjudicated. Just because it has not been adjudicated doesn't make it constitutional. The only way it could have been deemed constitutional is if you believe the US Constitution was written with the intent of defining Blacks as cattle rather than People. Secession was not constitutional either. The adjudication in 1869 on Texas vs. White pretty much settled this matter.
The Confederation of States did not adopt the US Constitution and raised the Confederate Flag to defend it. Rather, they created THEIR OWN Constitution. Therefore, they are the CHAZ of their time.

That Flag flew AGAINST the US Constitution raised by Democrats to secede from Abraham Libcoln's Abolitionist Administration.
It's not a symbol of rebellion against a corrupt government. It's basically a symbol of... the equivalent of CHAZ.

Found the Democrat Apologist.
The Democrat South who waved that flag CREATED THEIR OWN CONSTITUTION to supercede the US Constitution. There was nothing legal about it.
You're utterly ignorant and incapable of being educated.
