"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
George Orwell, 1984
A few more: "If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable – what then?’"
"Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing."
"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth."
They will burn Orwell eventually. He lays bare their game plan.
That and Animal Farm were required reading when I grew up. Before Common Core. And before the Franklin School could do too much damage educational system. Also recommended is Behold a Pale Horse, the road to serfdom, The Art of War, Atlas Shrugged and heinlein's Foundation trilogy. I threw that last one is because it helped me realize history does repeat itself.
After Trump was elected, I gave my son 1984 and Animal Farm. It was his Freshman year of HS. I told him to watch what the Demonrats were pushing and the similarities to the books. He wrote an essay on it in his English class. His teacher was cool. I was so proud that he had real interest in the craziness that we’ve all been thrown into. Thanks for the other recommendations. I was thinking about getting him The Art of War.
Its am amazing book. Also consider farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Its named as that's the temperature paper burns, as in books.
Orwell wasn't a prophet of any kind, in fact he was astonishingly lacking in self awareness.
He WAS a socialist himself, and a militant one no less(arguably a terrorist). In the depths of his self pity about the outcome of World War 2 he ostensibly wrote all this stuff about Stalinism, without ever once realizing that everything he said applied not just to Stalin but to all socialism.
He was a petty man who accidentally stumbled over a greater truth, but ignored it until his dying day.
I'm not saying those books aren't worth reading, because they are. I'm saying that the author is the political equivalent of a monkey with a typewriter.
I'm not going to completely agree with you there. Orwell definitely shows his colors with animal farm but you can't deny that were literally living out 1984 right now. Prophet being somone who sees the future. There are definately parts of the book that imply or espouse a socialist utopia. But there are many more things in 1984 that mirror what's happening today.
He saw the destination without knowing the route that was gonna be taken to get there.
Still worthy examining how he reached those conclusions and what he had to say, imo.
That's the point though. He himself didn't reach the conclusion that his work actually reveals. He accidentally shat out a diamond.
This is about the best analysis I've heard and it's on TD.win
Well, uncouth manner of speech aside, I'm fairly well read lol.
That’s true. Though the message is beyond the messenger at this point. Irony
DAMN!
And cancell culture is becoming the Equilibrium movie.
I’m reading (or rather, listening to) Brave New World by Huxley right now. 1984 has been my favorite since I was a tween, but this might take the cake. Test tube eugenic babies that are designed, conditioned and separated for various classes of society, the uppermost being sexually programmed to unemotionally fuck, abort babies, and take mood altering/contraceptive drugs from childhood. Then the people who practice religion, don’t take their drugs constantly, practice monogamy and have children, are considered “savages.”
He wasn't a prophet. They've been doing this for decades, even back when he wrote the book. They've just stopped bothering to hide it, since they've successfully been able to get the people on their side to buy into the changing history in real time. Who cares if we notice, because they fully intend to send us down the memory hole, too, eventually.
He was in on the plan and was bragging.
2+2=4
He’s not a prophet. My guess is that he read a few history books.
He had experience with propaganda that’s his field of study.
Read up on him.
Wasn't Eric Blair part of the system and just revealing a long term plan?
Same roundtable groups fund both sides of every fake war.
