More insidiously, all this "outrage" is yet another attempt by the left to use us Asians as pawns. Hey, we are victimized and oppressed OR suffer from Asian Privilege depending on the flavor of the day.
If the media is hellbent on reporting on how such language hurts Asians, maybe they should go all the way and report on the race of the people physically assaulting random Asians in places like New York. No? Didn't think so.

That's the biggest flaw of leftism. They have no introspection, it's all about muh hurt feelings. That's what they reeeeeeally want to ban, muh hurt feelings.
It's sad, but that's the culture they want everyone to move toward. I think they're emboldened by the actions of the leftist jurisdictions they rotate in and out of. For example, in Chicago, a gun violation for a white or black criminal is handled differently. The white guy is hosed, maximum penalty, meanwhile the black guy gets pizza and a ride home.
It's because places like Chicago are sick and tired of laying out money to house and feed the thugs. They don't pay their fines, they continuously commit crime and the biggest kicker. There isn't a jail in Illinois with a white population anywhere near the black population in Cook County Jail alone! Further, it's racist that white people don't commit more gun crimes or violent crime in general. Well, that's what prosecutors, judges and a leftist population says. So, a little slap on the wrist, here's $200, some pizza and a new iPhone, don't do it again. The revolving door of becoming untouchable.
