I don't know, I've worked for some high level people that under normal circumstances seem sharp. But they can make some really dumb decisions, and no one is willing to stick their neck out to set them straight (bad for your career prospects, and indeed your livelihood during this period). So people become silent or yes-men, and the companies go off a cliff because that's what the industry peers are doing.
Yup, they're high level people making judgments based on things they can only perceive at a surface depth. They're too enmeshed with other issues to give a deeper inspection and are of course going to think that the "diverse/anti-racism" angle is the right and safe bet.
Given that BLM and the Antifa-Left are bullies, for some companies it is a safer bet.
