I grew up around Chicago back in the 80's and we had damn near any group you can think of. Blacks, Jews, Italians, Muslims, Hindus, Hispanics, you name it. Somehow we just all got along by treating each other with basic respect and dignity. Virtually every religious belief system has some version of the golden rule.
The Italians ran the local grocery store and would put up a nativity scene every year. Much of their customer base was Jewish. No one bitched about it. The Hindus and Muslims would work Christmas and Jewish holidays while the Italians would work Islamic holidays. My job I was basically the only white guy there and no one treated me poorly over it. No, wasn't perfect but we got along.
For all the talk about "tolerance", "diversity is our strength", etc I have never seen more people so miserable and full of hatred.
