I grew up in a small town in Michigan. Never seen any racism. The woke shit really started to kick in during the early 2000s. Even though I never saw it I always had this idea that somewhere someplace in america there was a bunch of racists.
Then I joined the US NAVY and got a taste of big city life. Met a lot of folks from every walk of life. It really opened my eyes to racism. The horrible way that blacks treat eachother blew my mind. The worst was the phillipinos. The running joke is they are the philippino mafia.
Short story. So on US NAVY ships we have an EOO (equal opportunity officer). On smaller ships its a collateral duty. Larger ships with more people like CVNs and LHDs it's a full time position for one person. I was on a big flat top.
One day the EO is cruzing through the galley and noticed all the philippinos are sitting together and that there was also a large area of blacks doing the same. He opened an investigation to make sure it wasnt racism and segregation. Can't be having that.
He quickly discovers that they aren't being made to sit in these areas by the horrible white man, but, they do so willingly and purposefully. in fact if anybody tries to sit in their area they get bullied out to say the least. Wasn't ever really an issue, it was just an unspoken thing that whites were not welcome and we learned to just avoid them. Except the phillipinos, black tries to sit in their zone somebody gonna get stabbed. Maybe not right then and there, but, punishment would be delt. Nobody fucks with the phillipinos.
So he shuts down the investigation.... nothing that fit what he was looking to find. Later I happened across him and struck up a conversation with him. After discussing his findings I pointed out that he did in fact find racism and segregation. He just stood there speechless as it sunk in.
Once I even had a couple phillipono dudes offer to "take care of a problem individual" when they had noticed a black guy that was giving some of us bullshit and shenanigans. Slightly confused as to what they meant, they elaborated... they were willing to kill him and throw him overboard weighted down. Now let that all sink in for a minute.
