As someone who was there at the beginning (different username on reddit than here), it was always a political shitshow. BlueBoyBob, the user who set up r/cfb, was a total soyboy leftist. Banned people for wrongspeak all the time.
I regret not doing what I had initially planned and trying to take over r/collegefootball which was a dead sub. We basically had the same idea the same day and I just helped moderate r/cfb for a while instead of splitting the userbase.
Used to love that sub. Then it got political. Fuck r/cfb.
