Folks, if you're thinking about a gun for self defense, either a 9mm, a .38 revolver or .380 is a good place to start.

A pistol is a good first weapon because it is easy to transport, conceal (legally), and use for most defense.

Most semi automatics above $300 are decent.... my preference is those in the $350-650 range for beginners and will give you quality and reliability.

It'll take about $500 to $1000 initially for a weapon, a basic cleaning kit, a gun safe or cabinet or case, ammo, and basic accessories. Your local range or gun store will be a great place to ask questions. YouTube has tons of videos on ratings, instructions, etc.

Avoid a .22 for defense, but in a pinch they're better than nothing. Avoid .357, .45, large caliber rifles or shotguns for now, but as you become comfortable, expand into owning a 5.56 NATO AR15, and a 12 gauge shotgun. The 5.56mm also can fire a .223 but not the other way around. Great intimidation factor. Great for keeping bad people at bay at a distance, great for hunting for food if necessary. A shotgun is great for close encounters and the mere appearance of one scares the shit out of bad guys. You also don't have to be a great shot with one.

The main rules of firearm ownership is safety and education and practice practice practice. Get that muscle memory going and you'll do ok under stress. Get training.

Again, start with one weapon and become competent in its use and care. You'll find in no time it'll be no different than driving a car
